Jason and Sophie Gasser

Jason and Sophie met in New York 20 years ago where they were married and had their daughter Charlotte. After September 11th, they decided to leave the city and head to Paris against Sophie’s hesitations. According to Jason, in order for things to work between them, they had to live in Paris for at least a year in order for him to experience the French culture and to learn the French language. Fifteen years later they are still living on the outskirts of Paris in a spacious California-style apartment with now 15 year-old Charlotte, and 11 year-old Joseph. This family is the epitomy of a French-American family with a family-life inspired equally by the two cultures. Jason is the relaxed, push-over parent who gets laughed at by his kids when he gets angry, and Sophie is the stern, strict mother, who can say “No” to her children and gets the respects she demands: “We are not friends” she reminds her daughter. After spending the whole of last year trying out family-life in Austin, Texas, the Glasser family has experienced both ways of living, and can easily name qualities they favor from each culture: The culture of community (playing in the street, soccer games, BBQs, and pizza parties) from the U.S., and traditional French style (high-quality food, manners, milking cows in the country) from France.
